On our quest to find some cool gift wrapping techniques, we also learned about wrapping paper.

Gift wrapping has been around for centuries. Japan has been using cloth wrap for gift for hundreds of thousands of years, they call it furoshiki. Not only do they wrap gifts, they also use this wrapping to transport goods.

What about wrapping paper in the U.S.? Hallmark has entered the chat.

According to the Hallmark website:

“Hallmark can be credited with founding the modern-day gift wrap industry when, during the Christmas season in 1917, the Hall Brothers’ store in Kansas City ran out of the red, green, white and holly tissue sheets that people used to wrap gifts.”

The brothers then used decorative paper from France and charged 10 cents a sheet. Gift wrapping in the U.S. was born.

What about the unpleasant side of gift wrap? Where does it end up?

Did you know that over 2.3 Million pounds of wrapping paper ends up in a landfill each year? Believe it or not, wrapping paper is not always recyclable. How do you know if your wrapping paper is recyclable? If it is 100% paper, you should be fine. If there’s glitter and other materials, we suggest that you do not try to recycle it.
